Winter is a magical time, but can also be quite gloomy. With less daylight hours and more overcast days, it can be easy to catch the winter blues. Being born in Canada and now living in Chicago, I've had my fair share of winters. Throughout the years, I've discovered some tried-and-true strategies to survive the chillier months. Chicago was just hit with a huge snowstorm, so I thought what better day to share my tips for getting through these snowy days? Below are 12 of my favorite ways to beat the winter gloom and find joy in this season.
LIGHT A CANDLE
It will create a warm and homey atmosphere, especially when it's a winter scent.
ENJOY A MOISTURIZING FACE MASK
Winter can make your skin super dry, so using a moisturizing face mask will give your skin (and mood) a little boost.
CURL UP IN A BLANKET & WATCH YOUR FAVORITE SHOW
Get in a cozy blanket, turn on your favorite episodes, and enjoy the relaxation.
INVEST IN A HEATED BLANKET
Trust me: sleeping with a heated blanket will change your life.
DRINK YOUR FAVORITE HOT LATTE
Having a hot drink in your hand when it's cold outside is perfect.
MAKE AN UPBEAT PLAYIST
READ A BOOK BY THE FIRE
One of the best parts of winter is sitting in front of the fire while it's snowing outside.
PLAY A GAME
When it's chilly outside, staying in and playing a game with friends or family can be the perfect Friday night.
BAKE SOMETHING DELICIOUS
Baking is comforting - it makes your house smell amazing and the end product is oh-so-tasty.

Turn on lights, open your blinds - do what you can to make it bright, enjoying those precious hours of daylight. (You can also purchase daylight lightbulbs for the darker days.)
EMRACE IT: GO PLAY IN THE SNOW
Go back to your childhood days and embrace the magic of winter. Build a snowman, make snow angels, or have a snowball fight.
ALWAYS HAVE FRESH FLOWERS
Bring some springtime into your home with fresh flowers. (Trader Joe's has some great ones!)
BONUS TIP: TAKE A SPONTANEOUS TRIP TO CALIFORNIA
I'm currently in Northern California, and let me tell you - it's the perfect winter escape. ;)
